Subscriptions, Article list and Article

The application contains three main views:

  • the subscription / folder list.
  • the article list.
  • the article view, where you read article content.

The orientation of the iPad determines how the user interface is structured. When the iPad is in landscape, you are able to view the article list and article content, side by side. When in portrait orientation, only the article content is shown, with the other views appearing temporarily from the left hand side of the screen when requested.

iPad landscape arrangement.

The Article view has a button in its top left corner which can change the view arrangement. The button will either expose the Article List view, or if the Article List is already showing, it will allow it to be hidden, showing only the article content.

'Show article list' button.

In addition, the Article List view has a button in its top left corner, which is used to show the Library view.

'Show Library' button.

Swiping from the left edge of screen.

You are also able to expose the Article List or Library view by swiping from the left edge of the screen. This is a standard way to interact with application content on iPad, so it should be no surprise that it also works with LuckNews.

Honestly, this is all much easier to use than to describe. Just keep in mind that there are three main views. There are buttons and swipe gestures which can be used to show and hide the various views.

The Library.

The Library view contains the list of your subscriptions and folders.

  • each folder can be opened or collapsed, by tapping the chevron (arrow) icon on the folder row.
  • you can select subscriptions and folders by tapping on them.
  • one way to delete an item is to swipe left on it.
  • the bottom tool bar provides access to a number of actions.

The Toolbar provides access to:

  • creating a new subscription.
  • creating a new folder.
  • access to application settings, the privacy policy, and more.
  • sharing content with others.
  • ability to edit the library content, through deletion and re-ordering.

Deleting and re-organizing subscriptions.

If you tap the Edit button in the Library toolbar, the Library changes into its editing mode. While in edit mode, each subscription or folder can be deleted. You can also change the order of the rows.

After reading this guide and learning how the app works, you may want to delete the Sample subscriptions which came with the app. This will be a good time to practice re-ordering and deletion.

Article list.

This is where you choose which articles you want to view.

You have the option of showing:

  • Unread articles. Only articles you have not read yet are presented.
  • Favorites. Only articles that you have marked as being a favorite are shown.
  • Pinned. Only the pinned articles are shown.
  • All articles. This will, well, show all of them!

The most common choice for which articles to view will be the Unread Articles option. This allows you to go through new content, and as you read articles, after a brief delay, each article that has been read will disappear from the list.

The other choice you have is to have the system consider all articles across all subscriptions, or only the articles in the subscriptions you have selected.

Article view.

This is the view where you will spend most of your time - reading the new articles! There is more detail on this view in another article.
